NEW! "What I Did on My Summer Vacation" By Eliot Murray

I'm finally working on updating Eliot's page. I've reorganized:

Eliot is learning to feed himself. And in the close-up, note that he is finally, at 11+ months, getting his first two teeth.

Summertime fun.

4/28/06 Newsflash!
The Creature Walks! New Photographic Evidence!

In his own inimitable style, Eliot took his first steps whilst
half-naked, carrying his shirt in his mouth, with his eyes closed.

Yes, a week shy of 10 months, Eliot started walking. He is really pleased about it.

Enjoying the lovely spring weather.

World’s Happiest Baby.

Blayne & Eliot at 7 1/2 months.

All decked out for Mardi Gras. "Yum, these beads taste fabulous!"

Feb. 2006

Eliot loves his new rubber duckie.

Eliot started to crawl at about 6 1/2 months. Note the fancy leg kick technique.

Eliot at almost 6 months. I guess he thinks we're pretty funny.

Maybe I should be embarassed that I let my kid suck on his own sock. I don't care, I think it's a hilarious picture.

Eliot and his pal Jude, whose birth he attended in September.

Eliot loves to look out the window.

Baby's first EEG.
I guess a child's first trip to the ER is an unescapable parental rite of passage. Ours happened Saturday Dec. 3rd after Eliot had some kind of seizure, or maybe just something that resembled a seizure. It's fairly common for a baby with a fever to have a seizure, but pretty uncommon for it to happen out of the blue in an apparently healthy baby, as happened with Eliot. I was nursing him and his arm and face started quaking for about 30 seconds and his muscles tensed up. A few minutes later it happened again in just his face for about 10-20 seconds. The pediatrician sent us to the ER for blood & urine tests and a CAT scan. Results were all normal. He had an EEG December 8th and an MRI December 22nd, both normal.

Meanwhile, Eliot continues to have occasional shaky episodes once or twice a week on average. We had a consult with a pediatric neurologist on Jan 3rd, and his opinion was that these were not seizures, but were something called “benign myoclonia of sleep”, a variation of the myoclonic jerk, or “sleep start” that most adults occasionally get just as we’re falling asleep. (All episodes have been when Eliot is nursing down to nap.) He feels that Eliot will outgrow this in a few years. Our chiropractor is also helping us work on this with adjustments and nutrition.

The only other possible problem is that one of the tests revealed that Eliot has an elevated level of ethyl malonic acid in his urine, which is a possible marker for several metabolic disorders. This was part of the testing to determine the cause of his seizures, but is probably unrelated. Now we are supposed to have a consult with a metabolic specialist to see if he has Short Chain Acyl CoA Dehydrogenase Deficiency (SCAD). Here's a web link about it, if you're interested: SCAD We are not in a big hurry to get tested as Eliot has been his normal, brilliant, happy self and there’s no treatment SCAD if he has it anyhow. We’ll keep you all posted if we find out more.

P.S. Just to inject a note of humor, Paul says the above photo should be captioned, "Puny Earthlings! You are under my control! Resistance is futile!"
